The service

Orangeburg Pipe Replacement and Lining, explained.

Orangeburg is a sewer pipe made of wood pulp fiber bonded with coal-tar pitch. It was used widely in homes built in the middle of the last century. Over the decades it absorbs moisture, softens and deforms, often turning oval, blistering inside or collapsing. Many Orangeburg lines were replaced long ago, but some remain.

A camera tells us how far gone it is. If the pipe is still reasonably round and solid, a liner may be an option. If it has flattened, softened or broken, replacement is the answer, typically by pipe bursting from two small pits. We are careful with it, because jetting it hard or forcing a cutter through it can do more harm than good.

Questions

Orangeburg Pipe Repair FAQ.

How do I know I have Orangeburg?

A camera shows black, layered fiber walls, often oval or flaking. Homes of that era are more likely to have it.

Can Orangeburg ever be lined?

Sometimes, when it is still round and solid. Many lines are too deformed, and replacement is the better answer.

Why not just jet it clean?

Heavy jetting can erode soft fiber pipe. We use gentle cleaning and judge pipe by camera first.
